![]() | Dragon Float Coming Soon - We Need You! Thank you to the parents who contacted us to let us know you are interested in helping us build our Chinese New Year Float, sew costumes, glue and paste anything we need for our dragon and generally helping out with our Carp Jump Over Dragon Gate themed float. If you are interested in learning more about the volunteer opportunities with the Chinese New Year parade, please send us an email. Holiday Faire Most Successful to Date Thanks to everyone who supported this year’s Holiday Faire. It was through your dedicated participation, volunteering and hard work that enabled the PA to deliver a successful and meaningful event. It was a festive, high energy and a fun-filled day of community building with old and new friends. On this day, we were one BIG CAIS family. The photo booth, DJ (thanks Mike C!), middle school lounge, water balloon toss, hair feather extensions) were a hit this year and brought more middle school students to the event than we’ve had in the past. We continued our tradition of the beloved gingerbread house decorating activity, fun crafts, holiday vendors and delicious food and treats. And the icing on the gingerbread house? We raised nearly $6,000 for the PA to fund community initiatives. Be sure to check out the photos from the event on the community wiki and/or the all three of the division pages in Veracross. Special thanks to our "Chiefs" for their helping make this the best Holiday Faire to date.
As always, it takes a village of people to make things happen and to create community. Wishing happiness, good health and good fortune to you and your loved ones for the holidays and New Year! Last Chance to Order Self-portrait Shirts and Totes Our Parents Association has partnered with classroom teachers and has embarked on a fun and creative fundraiser this year that involves art and creativity that will result in a nice keepsake item. The self-portrait t-shirt project includes the partnerships of all grades and classes. We've seen a sampling of some of the self-portrait artwork, and they are super cute and will make great t-shirt and tote bags. Families can order the products through the CAIS online boutique here. Deadline for ordering an item is tomorrow, Friday, December 9. For those who regularly come to the Oak Street campus, you can see a sample of the shirts on the first and third floors. Flyer with more information can be found here. Pre-K/LS Art Teacher’s Work Featured at Holiday Sale Our beloved art teacher, Lisa Ostapinski is going to be in a holiday sale on Friday, December 16 at Mignonne in Berkeley. Between teaching art to pre-k and lower school students and running after her baby, Lisa has managed to create a collection of silkscreen on paper prints and small encaustic paintings that will be for sale. Additionally, there will be other local vendors as well as food, drinks and music. What you need to know
Pre-K Students Featured in SFGate This Monday our pre-k students sang “We Wish You a Merry Christmas” in Chinese in front of a large crowd at City Hall for the tree lighting ceremony with Mayor Ed Lee. The event, as well as our students, were featured in an SFGate story about the event. The tree, which resides under the grand rotunda in City Hall, is a unique feature of San Francisco’s holiday season and was created by Rainbow World Fund as a way to inspire hope and encourage people to think about what they would like for the future of the world. The tree, dubbed the “World Tree of Hope” features over 7,000 white origami cranes and silver stars, each containing written wishes for the future of the world from individuals across the nation and around the globe. Thank you to pre-k parents Aom Phanthong and Chris Foley for helping our pre-k students get involved. Winter Program Happening Tonight The Winter Program is happening this evening. The weeks of our students’ preparation and hard work will come to fruition on stage at the Herbst Theatre this evening from 6:00 - 7:45 p.m. Although the performance features third through eighth graders, all families are invited and encouraged to attend. Middle School Students are Stellar Spellers On Monday, 12 middle school students participated in the annual CAIS Spelling Bee. With four representatives from each grade, students took turns vying for the win with their peers cheering them on. In the end, eighth grader Megan H won the bee with the word "mononucleosis" and seventh grader Owen C came in second place. Megan, Owen and the rest of the participants put forward an incredible effort. Megan will go on to represent CAIS in the San Francisco Chronicle Spelling Bee. Be sure to check out video and photos from the spelling be on the MS Veracross division page. Parent/Student Info Night - CAIS-SYA Beijing Academy International Program We are eager to kick off our new CAIS-SYA (School Year Abroad) Beijing Academy international program this year and invite you to join faculty and staff for a parent/student information evening next Wednesday, December 14 from 6:00 - 7:00 p.m. in the Performing Arts Room (basement level) of our Oak Street Campus. The meeting will provide in depth information about the new CAIS-SYA Beijing Academy program open to all seventh graders which will take place the week prior, during and after Spring Break in April, 2012. Several administrators, faculty and staff members will be present at the meeting to describe the program and answer any parent and student questions. We are committed to making this experience accessible to as many students as possible and would love to have 100% participation from the seventh grade student body. We strongly encourage all seventh grade families to attend the meeting on December 14. Sixth grade families, you’re invited too! Depending on the number of seventh graders who can participate, we will open up spaces for a select number of sixth graders. Please attend the meeting for more information about the selection process. For those unable to attend, we will disseminate information following the December 14 meeting. We look forward to introducing this exciting addition to the existing CAIS international programs. Child care will be provided, RSVP here if your sixth or seventh grader has a sibling who needs child care. |
