FREE One-Week Training Program for K–8 Chinese Teachers

WHO CAN PARTICIPATE?

Open to a maximum of 12 teachers and aspiring teachers who are interested in developing skills in curriculum design and instruction delivery in Chinese immersion settings.

WHAT WILLLEARN?

This intensive one-week training will provide teachers with high quality Chinese language programming to bring back to their respective classrooms. The program will focus on the principles of Understanding by Design; the essence of thematic units; comprehensible input; student-centered learning environments; integration of language, content, and culture; and effective uses of performance based assessment that are linked with the learning objectives. By the end of the program, participants will understand the essential elements of immersion programs. Specific skills acquired will include:

  • Applying the process of backward planning for curriculum design.
  • Planning cohesive, student-centered lesson plans.
  • Gaining real immersion instruction experience.

WHO IS TEACHING?

Chinese American International School (CAIS), in conjunction with STARTALK, is pleased to offer this one-week teacher training program taught by three master instructors.

 

MR. KEVIN CHANG is the Chinese Program Director at CAIS and has been the Instructional Lead for the Mandarin Institute’s STARTALK elementary immersion program since 2010. His presentations on Chinese curricular and instructional strategies at different events hosted by NAIS, NCLC and the Chinese Education Conference have helped spur the growth of Chinese education around the country.

 

MS. MARTY CHEN is currently a first grade teacher in a Chinese immersion classroom at Uintah Elementary School in Ogden, Utah. Prior to that, she assisted with the immersion teacher training and curriculum design for the Utah State Office of Education. Ms. Chen has been a STARTALK teacher trainer for over five years.

 

MS. YA-CHING HSU-KELKIS 許雅菁 has taught Chinese in K–8 immersion programs for 10 years in the U.S. and is currently teaching in the CAIS Middle School. During the past ten years, she has made presentations at ACTFL, CLTA, NCLC, and STARTALK conferences, and also gave a one-week workshop on immersion school teaching at National Taiwan Normal University. She has served as a master teacher at the Virginia STARTALK Chinese Teacher Academy at the University of Virginia for four summers.

HOW MUCH DOES IT COST?

Registration for the one-week program is free. Travel and living expenses are provided by participants.
