Early childhood is an especially critical time for language learning, giving even more urgency for Chinese immersion educators to access one another and the collective wisdom of practictioners in this exciting, developing field. In partnership with a fantastic group of peer schools (see Planning Committee listing), CAIS is hosting the third annual Early Childhood Chinese Immersion Forum (ECCIF) for educators in Chinese immersion preschool and Kindergarten programs to network and learn from one another. The forum includes a keynote presentation by renowned immersion researcher Dr. Tara Fortune, breakout sessions led by conference participants, roundtable discussions, and networking opportunities.
We are thrilled to gather early childhood educators to discuss topics and share best practices in Chinese immersion in these critical, formative years for students.

Language Immersion in the Early Years: Exemplary Practices From Around the World
The research literature is clear and cogently argues the value of becoming bilingual and biliterate. Increasingly, immersion programs that commit themselves to developing additional languages through schooling are beginning with the early preschool years. What programmatic features and instructional practices characterize effective early childhood immersion education? Dr. Fortune will discuss key research-supported principles and practices for high quality early childhood immersion environments. She will also showcase specific examples from experiences observing and working with language immersion programs from around the world, including those that target English and Chinese.
Dr. Tara Fortune is an immersion researcher and founder of Tara Fortune Consulting LLC. She specializes in strategic planning and support for dual language and immersion education. For over twenty years she served as Director of the Immersion Research and Professional Development Project at the Center for Advanced Research on Language Acquisition (CARLA), University of Minnesota. In this role she partnered with veteran practitioners and leading immersion researchers to offer professional learning experiences that bridge research and practice. Her work has involved schools, districts, state agencies, universities, and non-profit organizations throughout the U.S. and abroad.
Fortune’s publications include two co-edited research volumes on immersion education, a research-to-practice handbook on struggling immersion learners, and articles in journals such as Foreign Language Annals, Modern Language Journal, Annual Review of Applied Linguistics, and the Journal of Content-Based and Immersion Education (JICB). In 2016, she received the U.S. Paul Pimsleur Award for Research in Foreign Language Education. Current research examines achievement, language and character literacy acquisition in early total Mandarin immersion programs.
