Global Celebration, Local Resources
January 30, 2017
Hsu Laoshi and Liu Laoshi tapped into the many offerings of nearby Chinatown to provide a rich context for classroom studies of the Chinese New Year traditions.
Beginning at the Chinese Historical Society of America, students enjoyed a “History Alive” presentation by singer/songwriter and CHSA Artist-in-Residence Charlie Chin. Next was lunch at New Asia Chinese Restaurant where students dined on Chinese New Year dishes. The teachers had introduced and discussed the dishes in class prior to the trip, so students had an understanding of the meaning of each dish in the tradition. To work off the scrumptious feast, students then went on a treasure hunt for Chinese New Year related foods and products while touring Chinatown. Ending at the famous Dragon Gate, they then returned to school buzzing with excitement from their adventure.
Many thanks to the parent chaperones who accompanied the trip!
