春FUN Program Spotlight: Movement
By Global Learning Coordinator Julie Farrell
Aside from a few gusts of wind, a couple of sprinkles, and one day of blazing heat, the weather has cooperated with us all throughout 春FUN. As a result, we have enjoyed a full schedule of outdoor classes with our four talented movement instructors.
Fan Yang is a traditional Chinese Dance instructor and beloved member of our Auxiliary team here at CAIS. Under Fan’s direction, students have learned new moves reminiscent of the “square dances” practiced in public spaces all across China.
Shufen Zhou is a lifelong Tai Chi and Qi Gong practitioner and teacher with a stunning array of achievements, including 5 wins at the US National Martial Arts Championships. She teaches at schools and organizations all over the Bay Area, and is passionate about sharing Tai Chi with Qi Gong philosophies with energetic young learners.
Hengxiang Shifu (Shijiazhuang, Hebei Province, China) and Hengti Shifu (SF), both instructors from Shaolin Temple USA, have held a commanding presence every afternoon on the Basketball Court at 888. Even though these Shifus were unable to join us in person this year, they are both remarkably effective in the virtual (outdoor) classroom. Dropping into Martial Arts classes, I’ve caught students reciting poetry, cheering each other on in small group and solo demonstrations, and receiving personalized instruction, all through our humble TV screen.
