Honoring Our Children’s Natural Pace

Lower School Director Wei Qian

I am excited to welcome you to the 2025–2026 school year! As I step into my new role as Lower School Director, my heart is full of anticipation for the journey ahead. I look forward to getting to know each of our amazing students from 1st through 5th grade and partnering with you to nurture their growth, curiosity, and joy in learning. Together, we will celebrate milestones big and small, navigate challenges with resilience, and build a vibrant, connected community.

In my final Kindergarten and 1st Grade newsletter last year, I shared some reflections after returning from maternity leave while caring for two young children. Those thoughts have stayed with me throughout the summer and continue to shape how I approach my work, parenting, and daily life. In a world that often feels endlessly busy, buzzing, and full of trends, I’ve been reflecting on what it means to move at a pace that truly works for us and to focus on the priorities that matter most. As parents and educators, I wonder how we can give ourselves the reassurance to honor our children’s natural pace, helping them uncover their own priorities, make sense of the world, and grow into their fullest selves. This, in turn, helps them discover who they want to be and where they fit in the world.

I don’t have the answers, but I am convinced it’s worth revisiting these ideas as we prepare ourselves and our children for a new school year. When the adults in a child’s life are aligned in our values and grounded in our own “north stars,” we create an environment where resilience, courage, and curiosity naturally thrive. One of my goals this year is to partner closely with teachers and parents to explore how we can collaborate effectively and model alongside our students what it means to navigate the many moving parts of school life with compassion, clarity, and flexibility, creating space for reflection, adjustment, and moments of joy along the way.
