Middle School Problem Solving in Math + AMC8

Problem solving with an emphasis on developing problem solving strategies and a solid foundation for mathematical thinking. It will prepare you for AMC 8 tests. Students can repeat the camp and it will cover different topics.

What is the AMC 8?

American Mathematics Competitions (AMC) are the first of a series of competitions in secondary school mathematics that determine the United States team for the International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO). The AMC 8 is a 25-question, 40-minute, multiple choice examination in middle school mathematics designed to promote the development of problem-solving skills. The AMC 8 provides an opportunity for middle school students to develop positive attitudes towards analytical thinking and mathematics that can assist in future careers. Students apply classroom skills to unique problem-solving challenges in a low-stress and friendly environment. The AMC 8 test will be held in November.

Math Olympiad [Taught in Chinese]

The International Mathematical Olympiad is a mathematical Olympiad for pre-college students, and is the oldest of the International Science Olympiads. The first IMO was held in Romania in 1959. It has since been held annually, except in 1980. More than 100 countries, representing over 90% of the world’s population, send teams of up to six students, plus one team leader, one deputy leader, and observers.

Math Olympiad (Taught in Chinese): Math Olympiad is a classroom that can increase students’ interest in learning mathematics, develop problem solving math skills, and stimulate creative interest in mathematics. The teacher will introduce important mathematical concepts relevant to each grade level. The teacher will also introduce problem-solving strategies while guiding students to develop the ability to use mathematics flexibly in solving problems. Math Olympiad also promotes mathematics creativity and innovation, while providing students with gratification, happiness, and stimulation when responding to challenges. Olympiad classes are held every Monday and Wednesday. Students will do a 15-minute after-school practice at home on Tuesday and Thursday. At the end of the sixth week of the summer camp, all levels will also have an Olympiad competition.

Spy Ai Code Camp [Full Day]

Join us this summer for a multisession camp where we will explore everything from coding, artificial intelligence, and mechanical engineering. This is truly a well rounded camp for students to become  true innovators for ages 7-14. Each week students will dive into a new camp theme to gain hands-on and technical skills.

Week One: Spy Ai Code Camp | Week Two: Coder / DecoderCamps  (a spy themed camp) put yourself in the shoes of the world’s most coveted top secret spies! This introduction course in machine learning and mechanical engineering will explore the inner workings of what it takes to be a spy by creating your own arsenal of communication devices, and even top secret algorithms only they can solve. Students will begin to understand how artificial intelligence and automation is changing the future. This program will focus on computer programming with Micro:bit to equip yourself in the ultimate spy adventure!

Overview: In this course, we’ll take a closer look at machine learning tools, to create amazing algorithmic functions to automate mundane tasks; such as teach a computer to play your favorite game, create interactive simulations, or train it to find patterns a human eye can not see. Through hand-on learning and programming we train computers to do things that you never thought possible!

Writing Workshops for Rising 4th Graders

Week 1: Mon - Fri, June 22 - 26, 2020
Week 2: Mon - Thurs, June 29 - July 2, 2020
9:30am - 10:30am
(9 lessons. No class July 3)

Did you know that glow-in-the-dark dolphins were recently seen leaping through the waters near Southern California, or that Australian scientists discovered a 150-foot-long silly-string shaped creature in a deep-sea canyon? Believe it or not, these are true events found in the news! This workshop will tap into the curiosity, wonder and imagination of your child. Students will be invited to become reporters who share exciting current events based on surprising facts, numbers, colorful details, and interviews with experts. These stories may include science, social studies, art, music, sports, spotlight interviews, and opinion sections. We’ll use dogonews.com, a website that provides fascinating news articles for children, as our inspiration.

We’ll invent made-up news stories (“Scientist Discovers a Strange New Species”) as a way to understand how to build fact-based articles. Students will be introduced to a fun visual game for understanding the structure for a current event story. As always, we’ll practice all steps in the creative writing process: brainstorming ideas, choosing a topic, organizing facts and details, writing first drafts, revising content, and editing toward final drafts. Students will be invited to share a reading at our Story Celebration on the last day of class.

Minimum 6 students, Maximum 12 students

Grade: 4th Grade

For anyone who has been intrigued by our mysterious past or the potential to explore our technological future, this workshop is the perfect opportunity to discover a fantastic world. We invite students to experiment with their imagination and ideas through writing their own adventure tales. We’ll provide a highly interactive, playful environment to inspire students to brainstorm ideas and create their own stories of time travel, historical fiction, science fiction, or anything in between. Our workshops will walk through every step of the writing process: understanding the structure of a compelling story, generating and organizing ideas, researching and applying historical/science facts, writing with momentum, revising for clarity and logic, and editing towards a final draft. Students will be invited to present a reading on the last day of class.

Comics and Basic Animation Workshop

Explore the world of your favorite animated character as you go on an adventure with them in your fantasy world through storyboards and narratives. Discover their universe and narrate their experiences through comics, figurines, flipbooks and animation. Make your first mini comic, cartoon strip, web comic and more online!

A comic and basic animation workshop through Zoom will focus on engaging each students’ creativity individually but also emphasizing on activities that are done collaboratively as a class. Each session will open up with a 5-10 minute ice-breaker activity, where students are required to draw either their favorite character or food item or space elements with dialogues, letting the class know how their week is going. This activity sets the pace of the class for the main topic of the session, which lasts for 30-40 minutes. The main themes in this class range from understanding and drawing basic comic elements, to character design, character facial expressions, dialogues and speech bubbles, self-made flip books, basics of animation, to web publishing formats for comics online. The last 5-10 minutes of the class are for questions that students may have or an overall class critique on the work done by the students. The critiquing is always constructive, to make the students realize their own potential as artists and storytellers.

Parents and guardians at home can monitor the progress of the student as we proceed through different levels of the comics class. I encourage students to use a positive tone in their comics as I help them with their dialogues in the lesson. I’d request parents and guardians to follow the same. The class emphasises on every story being told, heard and respected. Students learn to appreciate and inspire each other through their diverse art styles and storytelling techniques. I hope that we can continue to achieve the same goals and values  as we take our class platform online.
