Details on Workshops for Novice Mandarin Immersion Teachers

Chinese American International School invites all aspiring and new Chinese immersion preschool teachers to join our enriching series of three FREE workshops that are designed specifically for teachers who are new to the field. This series of workshops (two online and one in-person) will be conducted in Mandarin and is sponsored by the Chinese American International School, aiming to support the professional development of new teachers dedicated to Mandarin immersion education.

We hope to attract more teachers interested in the Mandarin immersion early childhood education field and provide coaching and teaching strategies for new teachers.

The series includes three main topics:

Session 1 [Online]:
Positive Discipline: Essential Skills for New Teachers

Date & Time: Thursday, February 1, 2024 from 18:00-19:00
Location: Zoom
Facilitator: Tingting Fu, CAIS preschool teacher
Teaching Story Sharing: Ruiting Feng, CAIS preschool teacher

In the first session, Fu Laoshi will explore effective strategies for fostering emotional and social development in a Mandarin immersion environment. Participants will learn key principles of Positive Discipline, along with important mindsets and techniques. This includes establishing connections before addressing challenging behaviors, using gentle yet firm language, and providing encouragement that alternatives to rewards and punishments. Additionally, practical insights from Feng Laoshi will provide specific examples to help understand how to guide young learners with confidence and respect.

Session 2 [Online]:
Collaborative Teaching: Cooperation in Classroom Management for New Teachers

Date & Time: Wednesday, February 7, 2024 from 18:00-19:00
Location: Zoom
Facilitator: Ya Ju Tsai, CAIS preschool teacher
Teaching Story Sharing: Tang Wenhui, CAIS ECD auxiliary coordinator

In the second session, Tsai Laoshi will explore effective strategies for classroom management and operations, emphasizing collaboration between lead and assistant teachers. New teachers will gain insights into effective communication skills, team management, and teaching strategies in diverse classrooms. For lead teachers looking to enhance leadership skills and provide guidance and supervision in a collaborative environment, Tsai Laoshi’s analysis and practical experiences shared by Tang Laoshi will offer specific and effective strategies for implementation.

Session 3 [In Person]:
Career Planning: The Journey and Professional Development of Mandarin Immersion Preschool Teachers

Date & Time: Thursday, February 15, 2024 from 18:00-19:00
Location: CAIS Preschool Campus (52 Waller Street, San Francisco, CA 94102)
Speakers: Chu Hsi Tseng, CAIS preschool director, and CAIS preschool Teachers

In our concluding session, we will transition to an in-person format. Participants will have the opportunity to visit CAIS preschool campus and gain insights into the self-identity and professional development stories of CAIS preschool teachers. You will also hear teachers discuss the challenges and exploration they had in becoming Mandarin immersion preschool educators, along with examples of career planning and development. We look forward to unfolding the journey of personal experiences, providing curious or in-service educators in this field with the motivation for more educational work and career development. Simultaneously, we aim to establish a Mandarin immersion early education community in the Bay Area, where, on the journey of “becoming a Mandarin immersion early childhood education professional,” we can be a mutual source of support.
